How to Set Up Free Alerts on Mention.com: A Video Tutorial

A video tutorial on how to set up free alerts on Mention.com (the awesome social listening tool that will protect your blog + brand).

Do you remember a few months ago when I taught you how to begin monitoring your online reputation with Google Alerts?

While I love what Google Alerts can do for both bloggers + businesses alike, today I’m going to quickly teach you how to step up your reputation management game with a different, much more comprehensive tool: Mention.

I love it, and I’m 97.3% sure you will, too.

(Please note the margin of error of approx. +/- 2.7% Hey, nobody’s perfect!)

WHAT IS MENTION.COM?

Mention is an online listening platform whose main purpose is to help you see + respond to everything that’s being said about you online (according to exact keywords that you specify).

Within it you can see real-time mentions of your keywords throughout the web, from social media networks to blogs and forums to news articles.

And not only that, but you can also do things like respond to tweets from within Mention — as well as super nifty things like send out your own tweets, make Facebook updates, and even monitor your Buffer account.

(Come on now, don’t tell me I’m the only one who thinks capabilities like this all in one place are a kick! 😉 )

I’ve been using Mention’s free plan since around September of 2014 (that’s 3 months after I launched Olyvia). It’s not necessary for everyone, but this is who it IS helpful for:

1. Small business owners/entrepreneurs/freelancers (* a must!)

2. Bloggers with medium to large blogs, or a rapidly growing audience

3. New bloggers who are actively working on growth/plan to monetize/plan to work with brands

4. Anyone whose blog/brand is controversial or has the potential to alienate a large group of people

And now, the video walkthrough I had a fun time making for you…after I started over about 5 times:

I love what Mention can do even at the Free level, but in the event you want — or need — more capabilities, this is the current pricing (accurate as of March 2015) for their packages:

Let me know if you try it, will you? And have fun playing around!

  • Hi Erika! We just came across your blog post and our entire Mention team loves it, especially the video. We would love to offer you a small gift to share some love 🙂 Could you send me to patricia@mention.com an email? Thank you!

    • You are awesome, Patricia! I will do that, thank you kindly. 🙂 (And thanks for the great tool. It is by far the best that I’ve worked with to do this sort of monitoring.)

  • Oh I’ve never heard of this before! I’m definitely going to look into this 🙂

  • Hey Erika,

I’ve always been aware of Mention but this has given me the kick up the backside to go ahead and get myself onto that free plan - I don’t like spending money! Haters gonna hate…

This is my first time on the site after discovering you through Andrea Beltrami’s latest post - but I will be back! Have subscribed and just followed you on G+ too 🙂

Enjoy the rest of your week,

    • Luke, wow, thank you for stopping by! (Namely because I now know all about your awesome blog! — And it truly is awesome. Great content.) I’m glad Andrea connected us. It’s nice to meet you. 🙂

Great post Erika! I really love how you easily broke down how to sign up and utilize mention.com!

  • Erika, thanks for the Mention how-to, you’ve made it really easy for me to sign up 🙂 Have a great day! Damjana

Hey Olyvia, I’m new to 21 day detox and loving it! Just FYI, the “click to tweet” link in this post isn’t working. You may want to check it out. Thanks again!

  • franjurga

Thanks for this, Erika. Like others, I have always put off doing a Mention account. But can you clarify whether they actually do offer a free account or not? It seems like they offer a 14-day free trial but after that, it’s pay-to-play-and it’s quite pricey. Is there any way to access a longer-term free account or did I miss something?

    • That’s a great question! When I signed up, there was a basic, forever free plan where you did not need to upgrade. I cannot find clarification of this on their site now, though it’s possible that it’s still set up that way and you can continue on with “limited” capabilities after the 14 day free trial. I just sent a tweet to them to ask for assistance, so I’ll let you know what I find out. 🙂

      • franjurga

Thanks very much for seeing the same thing I saw…I’m not crazy after all! I hope they do have a free plan.

    • Good news! This was Mention’s response:

Hey 🙂 We still have the forever free plan with 1 alert and 250 mentions per month. Hope that helps!

      • franjurga

Ah, Twitter in action! Thanks so much for going to all this trouble for me, Erika. It’s nice they do have a free plan, but only one alert a month will negate the possibility of responding to any mentions in a timely fashion. Maybe better late than never? So it goes. I’ll enjoy the two week trial, anyway. Thanks again, Erika!

        • Oh Fran, I should have been more clear! An “alert” is what they call the keyword/keyword combinations you want to monitor, not how many times they will show you the results when that shows up somewhere on the web. 🙂 That number is the mention count, which is the 250/month. So you could set up an alert called “Fran” and then under that put in the keywords you want to watch (say, “Fran Jurga,” “myfranwebsite.com,” etc, etc), and you would be alerted 250 times during one month when they “hear” or “see” those things.

Does that make more sense? I’m sorry for the confusion! And it was certainly no trouble at all. 🙂

Thank you so much. Never knew i needed this. 🙂
