20 Things You Might Not Know About Me

  |   Personal   |   8 Comments

Have you ever felt like business blogs should be less detached and a lot more…human?

I have to admit, it’s hard for me to break away from the more “corporate” way of thinking about blogging.

I love it when I see others loosen up, be vulnerable, or just have some totally un-business related fun on their blogs.

But when I do it?

Gosh. It just feels WEIRD.

Today, however, hold on to your mouse pads because I’m embracing those weird feelings! That’s because this post is nothing about what I do or what I know, and everything (okay, well, not everything, geez!) about who I am.

Have fun reading it, and then add to the fun by sharing some personal tidbits of your own!

Here we go…

looking-down

QUESTION 1: How tall are you?

Being slightly shy of 5′ 3″, I’m just tall enough to avoid being treated as a cute little girl…and just short enough that I have to look up to most people.

(It’s not as awful as I make it sound, actually. Haha.)

QUESTION 2: Do you have a hidden talent? If so, what?

My photographic memory, especially when it comes to reading. While taking tests in school, I could see in my mind the exact image of the textbook page where the answer was located. It almost felt a bit like cheating!

QUESTION 3: What’s your biggest blog-related pet peeve?

Just one?! Oh no, no, no. I can’t do that when there’s SO many to choose from. Let’s make it a Top 5 list:

1. Captchas and comment moderation
2. Popups
3. Videos on auto-play
4. Mobile UNresponsiveness
5. Paragraphs that look like my college essays

QUESTION 4: What’s your biggest non-blog related pet peeve?

When you meet people for breakfast/lunch/dinner and they sit there with their phone scrolling through webpages, checking Facebook, and texting.

I’m 33, which basically means I knew the world back when we were still running around in fig leaves. It was a less technologically interesting time for sure, but oh what conversations we had!

QUESTION 5: What’s your favorite song?

Oh, this is another one of those questions where it is impossible to give only one answer.

1. “On My Own” from Les Miserables (Eponine’s solo)
2. “I Dreamed A Dream” from Les Miserables (Fantine’s solo)
3. and, ridiculously, “I’ll Make A Man Out of You” from Disney’s Mulan

QUESTION 6: What’s your favorite Etsy shop that isn’t yours?

I haven’t shopped on Etsy for well over a year now. If you have a favorite, share it with me! Especially if it has to do with cute fall/winter gloves or hats.

QUESTION 7: What’s your favorite way to spend your free time when you’re alone?

Catching an A+ movie at the theater (we’re talking Lord of the Rings quality here, ladies) and having my annual box of Junior Mints all to myself.

QUESTION 8: What’s your favorite junk food?

I try to steer away from fast food joints because, yeah, it IS mostly junk…but sometimes those Spicy Chicken sandwiches at Wendy’s are too much to resist!

Also, Diet Pepsi. Awful stuff, but addictive.

QUESTION 9: Do you have a pet or pets? If so, what kind and what are their names?

Not anymore; I used to own two cats, but then I had children and the mess (plus added responsibility) was epic. I had to make a choice. My human tornadoes won.

QUESTION 10: What are your number one favorite nonfiction and fiction books?

Nonfiction: Likeable Social Media has been a fave, but I’m about to purchase Scott Stratten’s UnMarketing and I have suspicions that it may take the top spot.

Fiction: Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables, naturally.

QUESTION 11: What’s your favorite beauty product?

Adobe Lightroom. Oh! I mean, Lancôme’s Teint Idole Ultra foundation.

QUESTION 12: When were you last embarrassed? What happened?

I couldn’t find my car in the parking lot.

It happens frequently. I get about halfway out and then start wandering with a dazed expression on my face, straining to push my cart full of groceries and looking generally a bit crazy. It’s great.

QUESTION 13: If you could only drink one beverage (besides water) for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Limeade. And Vouvray. (These choices! Agh!)

QUESTION 14: What’s your favorite movie?

Umm, I think we’ve pretty much determined that already. 😉 Hint: it starts with Les and ends with Miserables.

QUESTION 15: What were you in high school: prom queen, nerd, cheerleader, jock, valedictorian, band geek, loner, artist, prep?

I was one of those people who really didn’t travel in well-defined cliques or fit an exact stereotype. (Thankfully this meant I was accepted by a variety of different people.)

I graduated with honors, wrote for the school newspaper, played tennis, and had friends ranging from band geeks to country chicks to one of my BFFs, a glamorous girl from Qatar. (Love you, Sharen!)

QUESTION 16: If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?

Italy. I’ve decided one day that I shall rent out a nice apartment there for a few months every year and totally unplug.

QUESTION 17: PC or Mac?

Mac. I transitioned this spring. Best decision ever.

QUESTION 18: Last romantic gesture from a crush, date, boy/girlfriend, spouse?

Romance isn’t part of my life right now. But my son affectionately kissed and hugged me yesterday, and that is perfect for me. ♥ Here he was when he was just an itty bitty man:

eating

QUESTION 19: Favorite celebrity?

Okay, I like many Hollywood actors, but all my favorite people reside on the Food Network. I adore Melissa d’Arabian and want to eat everything Ina Garten makes.

QUESTION 20: What blogger do you secretly want to be best friends with?

Marie Forleo. And Scott Stratten, if he were a woman.

Now I tag…YOU! If you want to participate, go here and get the questions. (Then let me know you’re participating so I can stalk your answers. …Cuz I’m cool like that.)

Thank you Marlene for tagging me!

Thank you for accepting the challenging, Erika! Your favorite non-fiction books seem very interesting and I will add them to my “to read list”. :). It was a great read. Thanks again!

  • Sharen

This is great! I learned more things about my BFF from this! I too love Les Miserables, salivate over Vouvary and heart Itsly so much it makes me want to move there. Thank you for sharing my dear friend Eruka. ( my nick name for her). I have to disagree on making the switch from PC to Mac. never! LoL. Luv u

    • Ah Sharen, we’ve always been soul sisters. <3 But what are you thinking still using PC?! (I joke!) Love you, too, my dear.

  • I love Les Miserables. I’m 5’4 and treated like a cute little girl, lol. I did similar things with the photo memory/remembering the page!

I think I’ve had better conversations with people since cell phones.. lol When I’m with people who get on them, they’re always pointing out crazy things they find and then we talk about them. 😉

I can never ever find my car, ever. I have to lock/unlock it to hear the sound so I can find it lol. I never know where I am, I get lost in department stores if I get turned around.. I couldn’t even give you directions to my house from 5 minutes away.

    15. I was a band geek I guess, but I was also the same as you were.. band geek is kinda just a term to use for 150+ people made up of some cliques but mainly clique-less people, anyway. I was in a lot of different things - band, chorus, musicals, christian group, keyclub/service group, SADD..

    I love my Mac!

    • That actually could be a great use for a cell phone. Though no one I have known ever does that; they just sit and stare and scroll…and sit…and stare…and scroll. 😉 Eeee, it’s maddening!

So true about the band geek connotation. I think that’s really true for most of the labels.

  • HI Erika:

This is a really cool idea. I am an art therapist and blogger, so I’d have to think about whether or not this was a good idea for me - perhaps too personal - but there might be a way to tailor it for my niche.

    Thanks for the idea.

    Amy

    • Amy, it definitely may not be appropriate for you. One idea that may work is to change it to something you feel is more appropriate for your niche and then share it on your Facebook page instead. (Oftentimes what isn’t so great for a blog is perfect for a social media post.)

      Thank you for stopping by!
